Mushrooms in Yoghurt Gravy / Dahi Mushroom

Planning menu for dinner is the toughest job, if you ask me. The husband wants a new dish/ side dish every other day and hates rice for dinner. So this makes me go with Chapatis most of the days. Then comes the side-dish confusion. I open the fridge, ponder what to cook( with minimum effort and maximum taste), rush to my laptop, Google, Google, Google. Google spoils me with choices, i bookmark every other recipe, getting confused which one to choose. Finally, I go with the recipe with the least preparation time. ( Oh, did I tell you I did majors in Catering Management & Dietetics for my B.Sc. ? Ok, now please pretend that you did not hear that. Thanks!) This being a daily routine, I always happen to have at least 2 packets of mushroom in the fridge. Trust me, they are life-savers ! Easy to clean, chop and they get cooked really fast !

Such a day, googling for 'easy mushroom recipes' took me here. Simplest ever, with the addition of curd ! I love adding curd to my chicken curries. and I do eat fish with curd ( Yes,I am unofficially a Dietitian ;) ).
So now to the recipe.

Recipe source : Monsoon Spice
Serves : 4

Ingredients :

  • Mushrooms : 16 oz / 450 gms pack
  • Onions : 1 large chopped
  • Tomato : 1 large chopped
  • Ginger garlic paste : 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds : 1 tsp
  • Oil

To marinate the mushrooms :

  • Yogurt : 1 cup
  • Coriander powder : 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala : 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Salt : to taste

Method :

  1. Clean and cut the mushrooms. Whisk together ingredients under 'to marinate'.
  2. Add the mushrooms to the marinade. Cover and keep aside for 20 mins. ( I refrigerated the marinade for 15 minutes).
  3. Heat oil in a non stick pan. Add cumin seeds.
  4. When they splutter, add chopped onions, saute till brown.
  5. Add the ginger garlic paste, saute well.
  6. Add Tomatoes, saute till they are mushy.
  7. Now add the mushrooms along with the marinade, mix well.
  8. Cover and cook. Since mushrooms ooze out water there is no need to add water.
  9. Stir in between. Once the mushrooms are cooked and gravy is of desired consistency, switch off the flame.
  10. Serve hot with chapatis !

  3. My other is the same, rice is not for me for dinner. He too prefers, either roti or chappati. Usually I cook extra gravy dish for afternoon, warm up and its with bread.

Lovely flavors. Mushrooms are always kept at home, sometimes the canned version because the fresh ones has an expiry date. The thick spiced gravy is perfect for bread/chappati to be dipped into.

    1. Hi Rahul. Did you use one cup of curd for marinating 200gms of mushroom ? Since the quantity of mushroom I used was around 450gms , in your case you can marinate with half or quarter cup of curd, depending on your taste. This dish is slightly on the sour side, but sourness is not that prominent as well. Also, using the other mentioned spices while marinating helps reduce the sour taste, by helping the spices seep into the mushrooms along with the curd. Hope this helps.
