A Comeback with Cabbage Stir fry...

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y ! Finally I logged into my blog after months ! The sudden absence was the result of a sick toddler, some personal held-ups and procrastination. Tons of emails made me lazy to open even my Gmail. It was just yesterday that I was clearing the mails, when THIS update caught my eye. As I was drooling over Anupa's Cherry cake, my eyes suddenly scrolled up again; 'Wait! did I read that right?'... Yes, Rafee had actually mentioned about me ! I was jumping with joy reading that. Thanks Rafee :).

Shedding the lazy-skin, I sat to work and here I am, back ! The comeback is with a simple recipe, Cabbage stir-fry/thoran. But with Onam around the corner, this seems to be the apt one to get going again. Talking about Onam, I am planning to cook the sadya for some friends, all excited about that ! But be it Onam, Vishu, our birthdays, any special occasion, it can never be as enjoyable as before; I can never be as happy as before; nothing can be the same anymore. A loss which left a hole as big as the universe in my heart can never be healed again, even by time. But still, life has to go on. And so has blogging too, of course :) ! Let us get on to the recipe now.

Serves : 4

Ingredients :

  • Cabbage : shredded 2 cups
  • Coconut oil : 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds : 1 tsp
  • Urad dal, whole : 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves : a sprig
  • Green chillies slit : 1-2 nos.
  • Shallots/ Pearl onions : 4-5 chopped
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Salt : to taste
  • Coconut, grated : 1/4 cup [optional]

Method :

  1. Heat coconut oil in a wide pan. Splutter the mustard, cumin and urad dal.
  2. Add the shallots, curry leaves and green chilli and saute well.
  3. Add the shredded cabbage and give a nice stir. Add the turmeric powder too.
  4. Close the pan and keep in on low-medium flame.
  5. Keep stirring at regular intervals. There is no need to add water as the cabbage lets out some water.
  6. Pay attention and stir in between. Add the salt.
  7. Once the cabbage is cooked and the water is fully drained, switch off the flame.
  8. If using coconut, add it now giving a nice stir.
  9. Here is your stir fry !
